As outlined in the PVPUSD GATE Plan, all students in Grade 4 have the opportunity to take the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3) assessment for possible identification as a PVPUSD GATE student. This assessment is administered online during the school day, and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The online administration of the NNAT3 has been approved by the PVPUSD Board of Education and requires parent/guardian permission for the student to take the assessment at school. Each site principal or designee will proctor the test in school during the month of October.
The NNAT3 test is a nonverbal measure of general ability that yields norm-based score, helpful in identifying students with the potential for advanced achievement or aptitude. NNAT3 provides a nonverbal, culturally-neutral assessment of general ability that is ideal for use with a diverse student population. With the use of progressive matrices across grade levels, this versatile test is well-suited for identifying gifted and talented students. The test features pictorial direction and requires no spoken or written language, making it particularly useful for also assessing who might be English language learners or who may have difficulty with reading. The NNAT3 is based on the notion that to learn new things, students must be able to perceive accurately, to recognize and recall what has been perceived to think logically, to understand relationships, to abstract from a set of particulars, and to apply generalizations to new and different contexts. These process are measured through performance on such tasks as detecting likenesses and differences following directions, classifying, establishing sequence, completing analogies, and solving matrixes.
